Abstract:
The contribution analyzes the didactic and moral dimension of four Ovidian metamorphoses from the Latin collection Poetici lusus varii (1700‒1712, editio princeps 1956) of the Ragusan poet Ignjat Đurđević (1675‒1737). Four transformations in hexameter, in which human characters morph into coffee, tobacco, chocolate and gunpowder, are observed through the prism of the moral education of the Jesuit school system in the context of which they were written. Likewise, the genre of metamorphosis, the three luxury consumption products and the imagological details are brought into connection with the tradition of Jesuit didactic poetry.
