Abstract:

The translation of Ovid’s Heroides by Jozip and Jakob Betondić, published in 1849 in Dubrovnik, has already been the subject of historiographic and philological studies (J. Golik, 1901; N. Beritić, 1960; Ž. Puratić, 1971). It is, however, worthwhile to examine once more the reasons for the translation and the reception of this work in which women are protagonists, and to read it within the framework of Ragusan etiquette, that is, as the publisher insists in the preface, within the already recognized Ragusan tradition of translation that included great men from Ranjina to Gundulić and Zlatarić. The contribution, moreover, analyzes several examples from the Betondić translation in the light of the contemporary translation studies criteria.
